About Me

Sebastiaan den Broeder

My name is Sebastiaan den Broeder, and I'm a political scientist, teacher, and writer based in Amsterdam.

My interest lies in how the world engages with and understands China, informed by my background in European Studies and International Relations. Currently, I am a Lecturer in Political Science at the University of Amsterdam. Alongside that, as a tech enthusiast, I'm part of the AI Team at the Teaching and Learning Centre.

Much of the current debate about China is driven by assumptions that quickly harden into binary narratives and, in turn, into limited policy: China as existential threat or strategic rival, with little space for nuance. Through my work I try to unpack those assumptions and make room for more grounded analysis, recognising real differences and frictions, but also the potential for mutual understanding and cooperation where possible and desirable. My interest in technology also means I care about the tech landscape in China and the competition between China and the West.

On this website, I publish short essays and news analyses. I might occasionally step outside my usual topics if something else piques my interest. If you're here because you are interested in IR, China, or tech policy, I hope there's something useful for you. If you're considering working together, feel free to get in touch.
